Customizing a Store-Bought Shelf

We continue to make steady progress in the subtle transformation of turning Amelia's room into one suitable for a 5-year-old. This weekend, out went the nursery chair (bittersweet feelings about that) and in came a book shelf. We were able to purchase a very reasonably priced shelf from Target that we put together ourselves. I wanted to customize it a bit, making it fit in the overall design of the room. So...
We went to the hardware store in search of a pretty shade of pink that would complement her current wall color. Success!:
Then, before attaching it to the back of the shelf, I painted the interior back "wall" pink: 
If you try this at home, be sure to move quickly and not use too much paint. When I became slightly sloppy with excess paint, the paper backing started to distort. Other than that, it was a quick and satisfying fix to a boring shelf!
PS: The poodle skirt made it through the rock n'roll party day in tact--and it had quite a good "spin-factor" as well:
